Platform Enterprises and SMEs: A Bibliometrics Analysis

Afzal, B.; Hernández-Lara, Ana B.; Li, X.
Abstract:
The purpose of the study is to examine the interconnection of platform enterprises (PEs) and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and to find out research gaps and emerging trends for future research directions. Through systematic literature review, we identified and selected 231 peer reviewed articles in Scopus with valuable contribution of PEs towards SMEs. These articles were analyzed applying co-authorship, co-citation, co-occurrence, and content analyses. Different underexplored research topics were identified which include industry 4.0, value added tax settlements and platformization. Moreover, we found novel topics like green finance platforms, over-the-top (OTT) platforms, gig economy, product design innovation and Islamic crowdfunding. These research gaps can serve as a basis for future research, contributing to the existing literature on SMEs and PEs. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.
